Setting up a web site - Part 1

One of the most important decisions to make for your new website is the domain name. This is what people will be typing into their web browser. Should you get a dot com, a dot net or even a dot org domain. Perhaps a country specific 'Top Level Domain' like .com.au is more appropriate.
Whatever you choose make it short. People dont want to type in a huge domain name. Make it easy to remember. People rely on memory when typing in a domain name.

What will you be using your website for? Business? Personal? Maybe a club or organisation. There are many different packages available for building easy to manage sites. Known as Content Management Systems (CMS), they are usually based on PHP, a web scripting language, and use a MySQL database for storing and retrieving data. A CMS package will usually be uploaded to the web server using an FTP client program on the users computer. The user logs in to the FTP server address with a Username and Password and uploads the CMS files.
A database would usually be created with a Database Name, Database Username and Password. Most good CMS packages will automatically configure a blank database during the installation procedure.

With the CMS installed and configured the site administrator can then customise the CMS by selecting a Template that contains font, color and graphics to give the site a special look and feel. Adventurous administrators can also edit the Template files to make it more the way they prefer. Templates usually have a CSS file that defines all the colors and fonts.
