I've seen a lot of great web sites. I've also seen a lot of really bad ones. Dont make the mistake of using a 'Website Design Program' that is not appropriate for the job. Microsoft Word is not a website design program. If you must use something to make a site, use a program that gives you the right features. I am including a list at the end of this document. Color is important. Some colors do not go well together. Dont use high contrasting colors - they hurt the eyes. Pick a color and try different shades or blends of that color. Picture size is important. Make sure any images you use are small in size. Check the image properties. Anything over say 10KB is getting too large. Larger images take longer to load and the site visitor should not have to wait more than a few seconds for the page to load. If you are using basic HTML then consider making a standardised menu and background for the site. The site header and footer should be consistent with the content for the site varying. Dont be afraid to have a different directory in your webspace for different pages. This keeps your site more organised. Use the same header and footer in each directory and use one directory for all images. The header artwork should be stylised and clearly show the site name, or an image that is site related. This informs people visually about your site and portrays your purpose for the web site. Keep menus simple. Too many options for visitors and having them spread around the page is confusing. Group the menu options into an easy to manage area on the page. Across the top, down the side, just be consistent with choices. You will find most content management systems use the same format of Header, Menu, Body, Footer. An Administrator control panel for the site will allow the admin to change templates, passwords, manage articles and site members. Some of the better CMS packages are: Joomla http://www.joomla.com Wordpress http://www.wordpress.org Drupal http://www.drupal.org - Robert Reply to this post:
