FTP (file transfer protocol) is a standardised method of transferring files to a file server. An FTP program installed on your computer lets you connect to your webspace and manage files in a windowed environment, usually showing your computer files in one window and your server files in another window. Typically you would have a server address to connect to, like ftp.'your website' This is much like using mail.'your website' or www.'your website' The letters in front of 'your website' tell the server what you want to connect to. Your FTP connection will also need a Username and a Password. Once connected you see your 'ftp root folder' which is much like a tree. On RobsWebsites when you log in you would see your website name in the root folder. Under this is 'httpdocs' along with a log folder containing your access log and your error log. Select your 'httpdocs' folder and you are now in your html root folder. Everything from here will be shown in a web browser when someone goes to your website address www.'your website'. You can upload your website files to this directory. Your default file is 'index.html' and should be changed with your own file. The FTP program also lets you change file permissions (Read, Write, Public etc) and create or delete folders. A subdirectory will appear on a web browser as http://www.'your website'/subdirectory/filename Read through documentation included with your FTP program and get to know how it works. Its an important tool for managing your website. We also have a WebFTP program available on our Main Menu at RobsWebsites.com - Robert Reply to this post:
